Dementia and ADHD care

Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a possible complementary method
in the care of dementia and ADHD.

A complementary option, not a cure

Dementia is an umbrella term: it covers several neurodegenerative conditions, for example Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. ADHD, by contrast, is a neuropsychiatric condition that may involve attention difficulties, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) has come into focus in both areas as a possible complementary method – alongside the usual medical care and therapies, not instead of them.

It is important to be clear: mHBOT does not cure dementia or ADHD, and it does not replace medical care or medication. There is as yet no agreement in the scientific community about the effectiveness of the method, so the treatment should in every case only be considered as a complement, in consultation with a specialist.

HOW IT WORKS?

What happens during the treatment

Mild overpressure

The pressure in the chamber is a mild overpressure of between 1.3 and 1.5 atmospheres.

More dissolved oxygen

At increased pressure more oxygen can dissolve in the blood plasma.

Supported circulation

The treatment may also affect blood flow in the tissues.

A gentle treatment

A non-invasive, pain-free, passive treatment.

A calm environment

It takes place in quiet, predictable conditions.

WHAT DO WE WORK WITH?

The treatment and the path leading to it

Mild oxygen therapy (mHBOT)

The guest stays in a closed chamber where they breathe oxygen-enriched air at a pressure somewhat higher than atmospheric pressure. The treatment is passive, non-invasive and pain-free.

Consultation and discussion

Before the first session we discuss the state of health, any contraindications and expectations. We recommend starting the treatment only in consultation with a specialist.

What does the research say?

The theoretical basis of mHBOT is that a higher oxygen level may affect cerebral blood flow and metabolism. For the time being, however, this is theory: there is no agreement in the scientific community about the effectiveness of the method, and further, larger-scale clinical trials are needed. On the basis of our current knowledge the method is experimental and complementary in nature.

  • A non-invasive, pain-free treatment
  • Can be fitted alongside the usual care
  • Subject to prior specialist consultation
  • Results vary from person to person
  • It does not replace specialist care

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does mHBOT cure dementia or ADHD?

No. Neither condition can be „cured” with this method. mHBOT can at most be a complementary option alongside the usual medical care.

What does the research show?

There is as yet no agreement in the scientific community regarding the effectiveness of the therapy. Further, larger-scale and well-designed clinical trials are needed. The method should therefore be approached with realistic expectations.

How does mHBOT differ from conventional HBOT?

Mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy works at a lower pressure – typically 1.3–1.5 atmospheres – and often with a lower oxygen concentration than conventional HBOT at 2.0–4 atmospheres.

What is the treatment like?

The treatment is passive: the guest rests in a closed chamber while the pressure slowly rises. It is not painful, but equalising the pressure in the ears may feel unusual – we discuss this in advance.

Are there any contraindications?

Yes. In the case of untreated pneumothorax, ear and sinus problems, severe COPD, inadequately controlled epilepsy, fever or pregnancy, the treatment is not recommended. You can find the detailed list on the oxygen therapy page and the FAQ .
